After you have left Ushuaia in Argentina and you have crossed the Drake Passage to Antarctica it is too late to go and buy everything you need for your trip. You just cannot afford to forget anything at all, so it is crucial to make sure you have everything you need before you leave. Clothing
This is the number one consideration for Antarctica, because it can be very cold. The best idea is to take layers of clothing rather than one very large jacket for example. This way if it becomes warm you simply remove one layer or two, and vice versa. Waterproof clothing is also important and having a pair of waterproof shoes, trousers and a jacket is really crucial, particularly if you are going to go kayaking or on a Zodiac boat. Medication
If you take medication it is important to bring an adequate supply of that before you go, because there won’t be anywhere else to get it when you leave. The best thing to do is always to go and get a fresh script of your medication, because you can always use it after your trip and it is much better to be safe than sorry. Things like anti histamines and tablets for sea sickness can also make your trip much more pleasant.
Bring a camera and binoculars
It is important to bring the best camera that you have with you, there is no question that a location as stunning as Antarctica deserves the best pictures. It is also worth bringing a few extra memory cards for your camera, because I can guarantee that you will take perhaps five times the amount of picture you would expect to take. A backup battery can also be very very useful. Binoculars are also useful for seeing things that are far away and means that you won’t miss a thing.
Sunglasses and sunscreen
These are absolutely crucial, because of the harsh UV in Antarctica and the persistent sun, which can shine for 20 hours or more per day! Snow blindness is also a huge risk, so it’s better to be safe with this and not get blinded by the beauty of everything.
A waterproof bag or backpack
Something like this is especially useful when you are outside or in close contact with water and ice (a zodiac boat for example). This will protect all your belongings, especially your camera and extra clothing. Ensure that the bag is big enough to carry everything you need, but not so big that it would cause a problem to carry it around with you whilst outside.
